Grammar explanation语法解释

Gradable adjectives可分级形容词

Most adjectives are gradable. This means we can have different levels of that quality. For example, you can be a bit cold, very cold or extremely cold. We can make them weaker or stronger with modifiers:大多数形容词都是可分级的。这意味着我们可以拥有不同级别的质量。例如,您可能有点冷、非常冷或极冷。我们可以使用修饰符使它们变弱或变强:

She was quite angry when she found out.她知道后非常生气。
The film we saw last night was really funny!我们昨晚看的电影真的很有趣!
It can be extremely cold in Russia in the winter.俄罗斯的冬天可能非常寒冷。

Here is a list of some common gradable adjectives and some modifiers that we can use with them.以下是一些常见的可评分形容词以及我们可以与它们一起使用的一些修饰语的列表。

Modifiers修饰符 a little/a bit →一点点/一点点 → pretty/quite →漂亮/相当 → really/very →真的/非常→ extremely极其
Adjectives形容词 angry, big, boring, cheap, cold, expensive, frightening, funny, hot, interesting, old, pretty, small, tasty, tired, etc.生气、大、无聊、便宜、冷、贵、可怕、有趣、热、有趣、老、漂亮、小、好吃、累等等。

Non-gradable: absolute adjectives-不可分级:绝对形容词

Some adjectives are non-gradable. For example, something can’t be a bit finished or very finished. You can’t be a bit dead or very dead. These adjectives describe absolute qualities. To make them stronger we have to use modifiers like absolutely, totally or completely:有些形容词是不可分级的。例如,某件事不能有点完成或非常完成。你不能有点死了或者死得很厉害。这些形容词描述了绝对的品质。为了使它们更强大,我们必须使用修饰语,例如绝对、完全或完全:

Thank you, I love it! It’s absolutely perfect!谢谢你,我喜欢它!绝对是完美的!
Their farm was totally destroyed by a tornado.他们的农场被龙卷风完全摧毁了。
My work is completely finished. Now I can relax.我的工作已经彻底完成了。现在我可以放松了。

Here is a list of some common absolute adjectives and some modifiers that we can use with them.这里列出了一些常见的绝对形容词以及我们可以与它们一起使用的一些修饰语。

Non-gradable: extreme adjectives不可分级:极端形容词

Adjectives like amazing, awful and boiling are also non-gradable. They already contain the idea of ‘very‘ in their definitions. If we want to make extreme adjectives stronger, we have to use absolutely or really:像惊人的、可怕的和沸腾这样的形容词也是不可分级的。他们的定义中已经包含了“非常”的概念。如果我们想让极端形容词变得更强,我们必须使用absolutely或really:

Did you see the final match? It was absolutely amazing!你看过决赛吗?这绝对是太棒了!
After 32 hours of travelling, they were absolutely exhausted.经过32个小时的旅途,他们已经筋疲力尽了。
My trip home was really awful. First, traffic was really bad, then the car broke down and we had to walk home in the rain.我的回家之旅真的很糟糕。首先,交通非常糟糕,然后车坏了,我们不得不冒着雨步行回家。
