Grammar explanation-语法解释

There are several different ways to compare things in English. We can also modify comparisons to show big or small differences.英语中有几种不同的比较事物的方法。我们还可以修改比较以显示或大或小的差异。

Comparing-比较

We can use comparative adjectives to compare different things.我们可以使用形容词比较级来比较不同的事物。

Max is taller than Judy. 麦克斯比朱迪高。
You’re more patient than I am. 你比我更有耐心。
His first book is less interesting than his second. 他的第一本书不如第二本书有趣。

We can use as … as with an adjective to say that two things are the same, or not as … as to say that one thing is less than another. 我们可以将 as … as 与形容词一起使用来表示两件事是相同的,或者使用 not as … as来表示一件事小于另一件事。

Her hair is as long as mine. 她的头发和我一样长。
It’s not as sunny as yesterday. 天气不像昨天那么晴朗。

We can also use expressions like different from, similar to and the same as.我们还可以使用“different from”、“similar to”和“the same as”等表达方式。

England is different from the United Kingdom. 英格兰与英国不同。
His car is similar to mine. 他的车和我的很相似。
The results from the first test are the same as the results from the second. 第一次测试的结果与第二次测试的结果相同。

Showing big differences-表现出巨大的差异

We can use much, so much, a lot, even or far with comparative adjectives.我们可以使用 much、so much、a lot、even 或 far 与形容词比较级一起使用。

Sales in July were a lot higher than sales in June. 7月的销售额比6月的销售额高很多。
He was far less experienced than the other applicant. 他的经验远不如另一位申请人。

We can use nowhere near with as … as.我们可以使用“nowhere near”和“ as … as”一起使用。

The interview was nowhere near as difficult as the written exam. 面试的难度远不及笔试。

We can use very, really, completely or totally with different from.我们可以将very、really、completely 或totally 与 different from 一起使用。

They may be twins, but they’re completely different from each other. 他们可能是双胞胎,但彼此完全不同。

Showing small differences-显示出微小的差异

We can use slightly, a little, a bit, a little bit or not much with comparative adjectives.我们可以用轻微、一点、一点、一点点或不多与形容词比较级一起使用。

The number of registrations has been slightly lower than we expected. 注册数量略低于我们的预期。
Houses in my city are not much more expensive than flats. 我所在城市的房子并不比公寓贵多少。

We can use almost, nearly, not quite, roughly, more or less or about with as … as and the same as.我们可以使用“几乎”、“几乎”、“不完全”、“粗略”、“或多或少”或“大约”与“as…as”和“same as”。

She’s almost as old as I am. 她几乎和我一样大。

We can use exactly the same as or just as … as to emphasise that there is no difference.我们可以使用完全相同或只是…来强调没有区别。

My grandma’s cakes still taste exactly the same as when I was a child! 奶奶做的糕点和我小时候的味道还是一模一样!
A new phone can be just as expensive as a new computer these days. 如今,一部新手机可能和一台新电脑一样贵。
